Teacher Training Routes - Salaried or Non-salaried?
TKAT SCITT is a school-led teacher training programme. You have the choice between a salaried and unsalaried route, depending on your circumstances.
School Direct Salaried route is a paid teacher training position. You will be employed by your training school as an unqualified teacher, please see here for more details on the salary which varies between regions. The school will pay your QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) training fees and you are not eligible for bursaries or funding.
As a salaried trainee teacher you will be responsible and accountable for your class(es). There is an expectation that you will have a higher teaching timetable from the start of the programme. We recommend this route for people who have experience working in schools or relevant work experience that will enable them to take on the role of a salaried trainee. All trainee teachers take part in the Professional Studies training programme and have the support of a mentor in school.
Salaried places can be highly competitive, depending on the subject you’re applying for, particularly English or primary placements.
There are certain subjects where there is a shortage of teachers, these subjects carry a bursary so it may be worth considering teacher training on an unsalaried route. You can find more information about those subjects here.
Unsalaried teacher training, also known as School Direct (tuition fee) or SCITT. On this route, you are eligible to apply for a student loan to cover your course fees and there are tax- free bursaries available for some secondary subjects. No previous teaching experience is necessary as you will always have a fully qualified teacher in the classroom with you whilst you train to teach. Initial teaching time will be up to 30% of the teaching timetable moving to 75% in total towards the last term of the course.
All trainee teachers take part in the Professional Studies training programme and have the support of a mentor in school.
